There are many skills that are important in the current age, among teenagers there are various popular life skills that teens are eager to learn and make a unique and attractive personality, one such skill that is quite popular is public speaking, but what exactly is the art of public speaking and how can it be mastered. Public speaking is the act of effective interaction of a speaker in front of a live audience with the intention of educating the audience or entertaining them with interesting conversations. Public speaking can be broadly classified into two simpler terms formal public speaking and informal public speaking. Formal public speaking comprises some important events such as conferences or important functions whereas informal public speaking generally deals in informal events like parties whereas the audience is not a large number. There are a number of reasons why one should master their public speaking skills. Public speaking helps in boosting the confidence, helps in career advancements, helps in building a skilled communicator in you, steady expansion of social network and professional spectrum, and building a wide positive influence.

  1. Analyze your audience and record their response to your talk and certain topics – knowing the type of audience in front of which you are going to speak is very crucial as analysis of the audience helps you to present your speech in a better way, an individual should also take care to have proper pauses and the pitch in which they are speaking, if pauses are not taken in right times they would lead to audience losing the interest and if the pitch becomes too loud or too low it would certainly lead in creating a negative impress of the speaker.
  2. Create a visual environment through impressive PowerPoint presentations – visual presentation is equally important as much as the verbal presentation, through visual means you can make the presentation more engaging because people tend to listen to something more patiently and remembers them for a longer time when visuals are shown, through presentations and videos you can make the topic more creative and make the audience understand the concept in-depth.
  3. Share personal experiences in between your conversations – audience easily tends to connect with the speaker through personal experiences as they can relate to a similar event from their past, so it becomes essential for the speaker to add little episodes of personal experiences that relate to the subject and share it with the audience.
  4. Study the audience and create proper eye contact – the basic rule of public speaking is eye contact with the audience, it is the best way to connect with people because when you are successfully able to engage in eye contact with the audience they would carefully listen to you.
  5. Arrange bullet points in such a manner that it becomes engaging – your speaking should work in a particular structure, you cannot impress people with a random type of talk which does not follow a particular pattern of discussion.
  6. Analyze and try to eliminate the verbal barriers – it is important to know and eliminate certain verbal barriers that would break the flow of speech, you should also take care not to overuse certain types of words.
  7. Use positive and engaging body language throughout your conversation that must be maintained equally – maintain an enthusiastic body language, keeping the body straight and stiff, dressing up properly, and having desired facial expressions matters when you speak publicly.
  8. Keep a constant practice before you speak at the event, it will give clarity on your mistakes and strong points – if you want to impress the audience with your speaking skills learn to speak in front of a mirror, have a practice of your speech before the event which would give you clarity on certain changes that needs to be made in the script also your strengths that can be enhanced and weaknesses that can be rectified
